Non-Dairy Milk Alternatives

Let’s talk non-dairy milk alternatives! With the rise of veganism and lactose intolerance, milk alternatives are the future. Here, we give you a rundown of the non-dairy milk alternatives Avanti offers for your drinking pleasure.

Non-dairy milk alternatives and your cuppa

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages and there’s no denying that coffee culture in South Africa has seen a boom. Statistically it’s been proven that the most enjoyed coffee drink in South Africa is a cappuccino. But, with more and more people becoming earth conscious, the rise of non-dairy alternatives in coffee beverages has increased.

So, what are some of the non-dairy alternatives on the market and how do they taste in coffee? Paula Visser, our Regional Manager in KZN shares her insight on the two non-dairy milks that we sell at Avanti.

Almond milk

This is one of the more widely used nut milks used in coffee. It comes sweetened and unsweetened. The unsweetened version while healthier can taste quite bitter to some, while the sweetened almond milk provides a smoother taste.

At Avanti, we stock Almond Breeze, Barista blend which was created especially for coffee lovers. It complements the taste of the coffee and produces a rich, creamy froth to sit stop lattes.

This blend contains 30% less calories than skim milk and regular soy milk. It’s naturally cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat. It’s not genetically modified and is perfect for vegans and those that are lactose intolerant.

Oat Milk

This is my new fave! It embodies all the taste characteristics of normal milk but without the dairy cultures. It’s also nut free and so it’s perfect for those who have allergies to nuts and seeds.

We stock a product called Moma Oat and it’s made using the best quality wholegrain oats which are packed with good-for-you fibres like beta-gluten which helps to maintain cholesterol for a healthy heart. They have also doubled on the good stuff and added calcium and vitamins D, B2 and B1.

It froths beautifully and the texture mimics that of normal milk, making it a great for use in cappuccinos.

Now all that’s left to do is enjoy a LATTE cappuccino with one of these delicious non-dairy milk alternatives!
